  • Job Description:

    This position will involve assistance with all aspects of oyster hatchery duties for restoration and fishery activities, but primary responsibilities will be with oyster larvae and seed. Additional duties include but are not limited to oyster broodstock conditioning, maintenance, spawning, larval rearing, spat production and settlement assessment, seed production, mass algae production, and long-line maintenance. Applicants should have the ability to multitask, as the hatchery is a fast-paced environment. Self-motivation, organization, and willingness to work productively are a must.

    Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

    • Carry out daily maintenance of shellfish larval cultures, algal stocks, and spat tanks.

    • Perform routine animal husbandry including spawning, larval counts, tank cleaning, spat counts, setting tank management, seed operations, long-line management and larval and algal culture maintenance

    • Assist with downweller, and upweller operations in the production of seed for industry needs; perform daily cleans of downweller and upweller silos

    • Set and grade seed

    • Maintain distinct genetic lines

    • Split, size, and redeploy oyster seed to prevent overcrowding and encourage growth

    • Assist with seed culture organization and clean-up as directed

    • Interact with customers in a professional manner

    • Perform general maintenance and upkeep and assist with various projects as needed

    • Complete paperwork logs and maintain records as required

    • Maintain hatchery safety at all times; comply with company health and safety guidelines

    This position will be located in Cambridge, Maryland at the Horn Point Oyster Hatchery. It is a full-time, in person position, eligible for State of Maryland Health Benefits, retirement, tuition remission and paid time off.

    Minimum Qualifications: A bachelor's degree in biology, marine biology, aquaculture or other life sciences from an accredited University is required. In place of a degree, 4 or more years of relevant experience may suffice. A combination of experience and education may be considered as well. One to two seasons of previous work or research focused on bivalves and animal husbandry. Flexibility to work holidays and weekends during the production season is required.

    Preferred Qualifications: Experience with oyster larval culture, settlement assessment, seed cultures, automated algal feeding systems, and database entry is strongly preferred. Attention to details to ensure distinct genetic lines to maintain ploidy requirements.

    Salary: $45,000-$48,000

    Physical Demands: Applicants should be able to lift 50 pounds and be able to work in a hot, humid, wet environment. Applicants must be able to climb.

    Role Summary:
    We are seeking a motivated, reliable, and energetic Oyster Farm Manager to oversee day-to-day farming operations. This leadership role entails stock management, sorting, culling, and grading oysters, as well as managing biofouling and landing market-sized product. The manager will lead a farm crew of 1-2 individuals and is expected to exhibit excellent communication, safety awareness, strong prioritization skills, and compassionate leadership. We value individuals who can adapt and problem-solve effectively in a fast-paced environment. The position entails 5-day, 40-hour workweeks from March through November/December, with potential for year-round employment based on performance.

    Key Responsibilities:

    Lead a 1-2 person farm crew with a focus on safety and productivity

    Communicate effectively with the Events Coordinator, Chief Operations Officer and Owner about farm harvest, operations and needs

    Operate processing equipment on the oyster float, including solar powered tumbler and pumps

    Plan daily schedules around farm accessibility and seasonal needs

    Raise and lower farm infrastructure in spring and fall

    Deploy and measure-out oyster seed

    Maintain appropriate stocking densities of oyster inventory on the farm

    Adhere to state Vibrio regulations for safe oyster handling

    Harvest market-ready oysters to meet company quality specifications

    Prevent and manage biofouling on gear, equipment, and oysters

    Conduct record-keeping for quality control, inventory, and farm maintenance

    Utilize Google Suite and other applications for reporting, logging, and maintenance records

    Repair, maintain, and deploy gear as necessary

    Record data for plastic-free aquaculture initiatives as required

    Collaborate with the owner and COO to improve farm efficiency and evaluate new technologies

    Manage farm supplies and vessel inventory

    Qualifications:

    Minimum 2 years of experience working with and handling small boats (oyster farming experience preferred)

    Valid driver's license

    Strong, clear communication skills

    Ability to work independently and as part of a team

    Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions from March to December

    Physical capacity to work on your feet on the water, and lift/push/pull up to 50 lbs

    Willingness to live or relocate within a reasonable commuting distance to the farm

    Experience steering and safely maneuvering 20-25’ boats with outboards (helm and tiller steering)

    Competency in rowing

    Familiarity with operating and maintaining winches, haulers, and pumps

    Description of Job/opportunity text display: Lawrence University of Wisconsin, a selective undergraduate liberal arts college and conservatory of music located in Appleton, Wisconsin, invites applications for a full-time tenure track Assistant Professor of Biology (aquatic ecology) to begin September 1, 2025. Candidates should hold a Ph.D. in aquatic ecology or closely related field prior to the time of appointment. We seek an individual who is passionate about teaching and working with undergraduate students in a liberal arts setting, an active and engaged scholar, and an effective mentor for students from diverse backgrounds.

    Primary responsibilities include teaching with active learning methods, leading occasional tutorials and mentoring student research projects; assessing student learning; advising and mentoring students; assisting in curricular planning; and departmental and institutional service. Teaching load is two non-lab courses (or one course with two lab sections) per trimester on a 10-week trimester calendar. Laboratory space, funds to support research, and support for professional development are available. The successful candidate will also participate in Lawrence’s flagship First-Year Studies program. The First-Year Studies curriculum is an interdisciplinary introduction to the liberal arts intended to support new students’ fundamental skills as readers, writers, and thinkers. The successful candidate will teach BIOL 330: Aquatic Ecology, one introductory biology course, and upper-level courses in their area of expertise. In addition, they will contribute to the Environmental Sciences program and co-direct Lawrence’s signature Marine Term, which is traditionally run in the spring term every other year and requires competency in diving on SCUBA.

    Candidates should have the ability and desire to engage and mentor undergraduates in collaborative research, and otherwise connect scholarship with teaching. Laboratory space and start-up funds are available for establishing a research program. The Department of Biology has excellent facilities to support faculty research and teaching, including state-of-the-art facilities for use in cell culture work and several model genetic and ecological systems, biological imaging, and plant and animal terrestrial and aquatic science research. Lawrence owns 5 vessels ranging from smaller motorboats and trailers for field trips and research on small lakes, to a 23-foot Boston Whaler, and a 22-ft enclosed cabin vessel.

  • UAS Sitka Campus is seeking a Mariculture Program Coordinator to assist with the operations and maintenance duties for a growing seaweed and shellfish mariculture training program. This position is term-funded through September 30, 2026.

    To be successful in this position, you will have a broad educational and career background that demonstrates an interest in aquaculture, mariculture, and education. You will have the ability to coordinate travel/transportation logistics, materials/gear distribution, purchasing supplies, and student outreach/intake support. Additionally, you will have skills for working on small vessels and marine equipment operations and maintenance.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    College coursework and experience in a field relevant to aquaculture, mariculture, fisheries, marine sciences is required. 
    Must possess an unrestricted Alaska driver's license and clean driving record in compliance with UA Safe Driving criteria.

    While not required, the following experiences and qualifications are highly desirable: experience operating a small vessel in coastal Alaskan waters, experience using Oceanographic and Limnological scientific equipment and dry suit SCUBA Certification.

    Position Details:

    This position is located on the Sitka Campus of UAS. This is a full-time, term-funded non-exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package.     Job Description:

    The University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES) Horn Point Laboratory is seeking applications to fill the position of Shellfish Aquaculture Outreach Specialist. This position will be either a Faculty Research Assistant or Assistant Research Scientist dependent upon education and experience. This position will be located in Cambridge, Maryland. The Outreach Specialist position will be a Full time hybrid position reporting directly to Horn Point Lab director, Mike Sieracki.

    The Chesapeake Bay is renowned for its fishing and aquaculture industries, as well as its restoration program – one of the largest restoration initiatives in North America. Coexistence and constructive collaboration between these sectors are crucial and largely dependent upon the levels of effective communication among different stakeholders.

    The Shellfish Aquaculture Outreach Specialist will play a pivotal role in bridging the gap between scientific research and industry application in the areas of shellfish aquaculture, fisheries, and restoration. Collaborating closely with Horn Point Laboratory scientists, and home to the largestthe oyster hatchery on the East Coast, the person in this position will focus on translating solution-driven research into actionable strategies to enhance the diversity, productivity, growth, and resiliency of the Chesapeake Bay shellfish aquaculture and wild harvest industries. This position is partially supported by Maryland Sea Grant and the Outreach Specialist will be part of the Sea Grant network and work with the Maryland Sea Grant program. Advancing sustainable aquaculture and wild fisheries are core missions of Sea Grant. The person in this position will have access to Sea Grant resources and be expected to work with Maryland industry, state government and non-governmental organizations important to fisheries issues in the state.

    Key Responsibilities:

    1. Translation of Science to Industry:

      • Interpret scientific findings and advancements in shellfish aquaculture, fisheries, and restoration into practical strategies and recommendations for industry stakeholders.

      • Collaborate with research teams to identify emerging challenges and opportunities in the field and develop innovative, practical solutions.

    2. Outreach and Engagement:

      • Foster strong relationships with industry associations, governmental agencies, non-profit organizations, and the Sea Grant network to facilitate knowledge exchange and collaborative initiatives.

      • Identify funding opportunities and participate in grant writing to support research and outreach projects aligned with organizational goals.

    4. Education and Training:

    DESCRIPTION OF OPPORTUNITY:

    Learn all the skills to become an oyster farmer. You could become an apprentice, which leads to a captain's license. Credentials in boating safety and food safety, allergens, and alcohol are provided.

    This program opportunity is organized by the Aquaculture Real Jobs Training Partnership led by The Education Exchange, Inc..

    During the first three weeks, participants work on their Boating safety and basic boat mechanics, oyster farming and shellfish biology, customer service skills, and earn their ServSafe Certifications. Opportunities exist to create a pathway to a year long apprenticeship that leads to a captain's license.

    For the fourth week, participants will complete a 30-hour internship to demonstrate the skills they have learned and to gain experience in the industry. The main goal of this training is to get Rhode Islanders back to work.
